How Thuruthikkara Became Kerala’s First Green Village in Just 3 Months

Focusing on primary sectors like waste management, energy efficiency and environmental conservation, the concerned authorities managed to accomplish their envisioned objectives in three months.

Located in Mulanthuruthy Panchayat of Ernakulam district, Thuruthikkara is amongst the countless villages in Kerala that are only known for their various Hindu temples.

But hereafter, Thuruthikkara will also have the certified distinction of being the first green village in the entirety of Kerala.

Announced by Haritha Keralam Mission vice-chairperson and chief executive officer T N Seema during an event held at the village on Tuesday, the feat was strategically achieved through a series of dedicated initiatives.

Titled ‘Oorja Nirmala Haritha Gramam’, the project was flagged off by Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) in October last year, in collaboration with various regional organisations and political parties.

Focusing on primary sectors like waste management, energy efficiency and environmental conservation, the concerned authorities managed to accomplish their envisioned objectives in three months.

“What makes the project unique is its success in cultivating and implementing a new culture of waste management, energy efficiency, water security and scientific farming. The project will be a role model for the entire state,” Seema told Deccan Chronicle.

Despite the speedy achievement, a lot went behind in making the project a reality. Starting with educating all the 349 families in Thuruthikkara about various environmental issues through regular classes, KSSP also roped in experts from Cochin University of Science and Technology to ensure that the quality of drinking water in the region is safe.

These experts not only took samples from household wells to verify this but also trained the villagers to conduct the water quality tests themselves.

Upon hitting the culmination, the concerned authorities also organised a green biennale where exhibits of green and energy efficient houses were put up on display to inspire the villagers. There were also stalls where vegetable seeds, saplings, grow bags, organic fertiliser, LED bulbs, kitchen bins, bio-bins, biogas plant, eco-friendly carry bags, solar water heater, solar cooker and lighting system were up for sale.

Interestingly, the village had already been emblazoned with tags like plastic-free, e-waste free and filament-free before the recent project had taken flight.

The Oorja Nirmala Haritha Gramam project is being incorporated across the state with the support of various agencies like Energy Management Centre Kerala, ANERT, Haritha Kerala Mission, Clean Kerala Mission, Suchitwa Mission, CUSAT, Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara, and the Integrated Rural Technology Centre.

The effort and willingness by the villagers of Thuruthikkara to make their hometown a better place is indeed inspirational. If villages and towns across the country come together and adopt similar green models, we can be sure that a better and carbon-footprint free future awaits us all.
